Who I AM

Greetings, I'm Frederick Worrell, a celebrated indigenous artist and designer hailing from New Zealand, now making my mark in Newcastle upon Tyne - UK. My journey has been a vibrant blend of spatial design, visual communication, and fine artistry, enriched by my cultural heritage from my Māori and English heritage.

In the past four years, transitioning from a conventional career to full-time artistry has been transformative. Exploring themes of cultural identity, female empowerment, and the beauty of nature, my creations resonate deeply with the spirit of my ancestors and our interconnectedness with the world.

Notable among my achievements is the acclaimed convex mirror artwork, honoured with the 2021 Joan Kinder Salver Award for Innovation. This piece embodies my exploration of time and heritage, a theme echoed in my collaborative architectural endeavours, such as the groundbreaking Wharenui Harikoa Project.

Selected to represent New Zealand at prestigious global events like the Asian Art Biennial in Bangladesh, I've embraced the opportunity to share my indigenous perspective on an international stage.

Living abroad has paradoxically strengthened my connection to my Māori roots, infusing my work with a renewed sense of identity and purpose. Inspired by nature's hues and textures, my creations exude vitality and emotion, inviting viewers to explore and reflect.

With a background in commercial and residential interior design, I arrived in the UK in 2014, seeking fresh horizons alongside my family. Today, I continue to craft evocative pieces that captivate and inspire, both for personal collections and commissioned projects worldwide.

I invite you to engage with my art, to experience the vibrancy and depth it brings to spaces and souls alike.

Please don't hesitate to get in touch to discuss collaborations or inquiries.

Ngā mihi nui,

Freddy
