Creative Engagement
Creative Engagement
Alongside his studio practice, Frederick Worrell works with local authorities, educational institutions, cultural organisations and community groups to develop collaborative art and design projects.
Drawing on his experience in contemporary art, architectural design and public art, Frederick creates opportunities for people of different ages and backgrounds to engage with artistic processes, explore cultural identity and contribute to their shared environments.
His projects range from large-scale public murals and sculptural installations to creative workshops and educational collaborations, bringing together artistic expression, cultural connection and community participation.

Laygate | Public Art Commission
2025 | South Shields
Commissioned by South Tyneside Council, Frederick created a large-scale public mural in Laygate, South Shields.
Developed for a prominent public setting, the artwork contributes to the visual identity of the area, demonstrating Frederick's experience in creating site-specific artworks that engage with the character and architecture of their surroundings.
South Tyneside Youth Service
Frederick has collaborated with South Tyneside Youth Service on a range of creative projects, bringing together his experience in contemporary art, mural painting and collaborative artmaking to create distinctive artworks and opportunities for young people to engage with the creative process.
The Hut | Mural Commission
2026 | South Tyneside
Commissioned by South Tyneside Youth Service, Frederick designed and completed a large-scale mural for The Hut, a space dedicated to young people in South Tyneside.
The artwork incorporates local landmarks, wildlife and bold geometric patterns, bringing together imagery including a lighthouse, birds, a moth and a tree within a cohesive composition.
Created specifically for the setting, the mural introduces colour, movement and a distinctive artistic identity to the space, reflecting Frederick's ability to develop commissioned artworks for environments that serve their communities.
South Tyneside Youth Festival | Collaborative Artwork
Working with South Tyneside Youth Service, Frederick facilitated the creation of a collaborative four-panel artwork during the South Tyneside Youth Festival.
He developed the initial painted background before inviting young participants to contribute their own imagery using freehand drawing, stencils and Posca markers.
The resulting quadriptych brought together individual artistic contributions into a unified composition, giving participants the opportunity to explore creative techniques, express their own ideas and take part in the development of a shared artwork.
North Shields 800 | Community Sculpture
2025 | North Shields
As part of the celebrations marking 800 years of North Shields, Frederick worked with local residents as the lead artist to create reflective silver fish sculptures inspired by the town's maritime heritage.
The finished pieces formed part of an illuminated parade, bringing together community participation, sculptural artmaking and the celebration of local history.
Weetslade Art Trail | Helix Arts
2024–2025 | Weetslade Country Park, North Tyneside
Commissioned through Helix Arts' Make It Happen programme, Frederick collaborated with local residents, families and volunteers to develop an art trail inspired by the natural environment of Weetslade Country Park.
Working in partnership with Northumberland Wildlife Trust, the project brought together environmental themes, contemporary artistic techniques and community participation.
Through a series of workshops, participants explored composition, mark-making and the use of inks, creating original convex mirror artworks and painted mandala stones inspired by the park's flora, fauna and landscape.
The resulting artworks were presented along a public trail in April 2025, inviting visitors to experience the surrounding environment through colour, reflection and different artistic perspectives.
Funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
Creative Learning & Community Collaboration
2026 | Meadow Well, North Shields
As part of Helix Arts' Make It Happen: Playful Pavements programme, Frederick delivered a graffiti-inspired workshop for young people and families at The Meadows in North Shields.
Using stencils, chalk spray paint and freehand drawing, participants explored street art techniques and worked together to create temporary artworks in a shared outdoor environment.
The workshop formed part of a wider community-led street arts event in July 2026, which brought together more than 100 local residents and families through creative activities and community participation.
CAST — Citizens Assembly South Tyneside | Creative Workshops
2023–2026 | South Tyneside
In collaboration with Citizens Assembly South Tyneside (CAST), Frederick delivered a series of creative workshops for young people between 2023 and 2026.
Using custom stencil designs and accessible artmaking techniques, participants explored composition, colour and personal expression while developing their own original artworks.
The programme introduced young people to practical artistic processes and provided opportunities to experiment, build creative confidence and develop individual visual ideas.
The Botany Bay Project | Border Crossings
2022 | Oswald Primary School, Manchester
Frederick was selected as one of five Indigenous artists based in the United Kingdom to participate in The Botany Bay Project, an initiative by Border Crossings exploring the migration histories of plants and their relationship to colonialism.
Working collaboratively with pupils from the Garden Club at Oswald Primary School in Manchester, Frederick developed a triptych of convex mirror artworks informed by the children's ideas and their engagement with the natural environment.
The three interconnected works explore the movement of plant and bird life, the concept of kaitiaki (guardian or protector) and the introduction of non-native tropical species. Through colour, imagery and reflection, the triptych brings together Māori cultural perspectives, environmental change and questions about the movement of species across geographical boundaries.
The project combined artistic research, cultural exchange and collaborative making, giving young participants an opportunity to contribute to the development of a contemporary artwork addressing themes of colonial history, biodiversity and climate change.
Creative Commissions & Partnerships
Frederick welcomes opportunities to collaborate with local authorities, cultural institutions, schools, universities and community organisations on public artworks, creative engagement programmes and participatory projects.
With experience in visual art, spatial design and workshop facilitation, he can contribute to projects from early creative development through to practical delivery, working with organisations to develop approaches suited to their setting, participants and objectives.
